Documented Life Project - Week Three

January Theme: The blank page and how to face it
Week Three Challenge: The Colour Wheel
Week Three Prompt: "I found I could say things with colour & shapes that I couldn't say any other way..." Georgia O'Keefe

I think I'm finished with this page, however I did think I was done yesterday and got as far as photographing it but then when I left it for a few hours and came back to it I added a bit more. So I think I'm done but I may come back to it again. I've enjoyed this prompt the most so far. It's been really dark and miserable weather for the last couple of weeks so the colour was a welcome relief, although it has been difficult to photograph. If I hang on and wait for better light though I could be here until July so bugger that. I started with the basic colour wheel but soon added plenty more. I did a small abstract watercolour and added some journalling. I also used some found objects from my stash, acrylics, gesso, inks, biro, this really is a mixed media page.

I have to say I am loving this art pad so far. It's a Strathmore mixed media pad and it is taking everything I'm throwing at it. I didn't get the recommended pad for this year's Documented Life Project as it looked nice but was really expensive to get hold of. I took a chance on this one after searching about. I'm fussy about paper and hadn't tried this before but it's fab. I'll certainly get one again. I also got a smaller size than the Dina Wakley book as I knew I would struggle to find the time to fill bigger pages and I really didn't want to give up halfway through. I'm all caught up now though, my week 4 page is well under way.

Documented Life Project - Week Two

January Theme: The blank page and how to face it
Week Two Challenge: Gesso
Week Two Prompt: "The beginning is always today" Mary Shelley

I'm calling this page done. The prompt quote appealed to me this week so I included it. I won't use it every week on the page, just as a starting point. I don't really have lots to say about what I did as I've never been a fan of talking about my artwork. It's usually pretty personal to me and trying to explain why I did this or that is difficult. Often because half the time I just did what felt or looked right. Trying to explain it is pretty much impossible. I do like to share though, as much as to keep a record for myself if nothing else. You know what it's like. You finish a piece or a journal and put it away and before you know it you've got boxes full of stuff that never gets looked at. At least by sharing I can look back over what I was up to.

I've been working on week two and three together so I'm almost finished with the next one and then I'll be all caught up - hurray! We'll see how long it lasts. I also have a new little project I want to try and get the kid to join in with me. I saw these anti-journals were on sale so got one for me and him to do together.

Documented Life Project - Week One

I finally managed to get some art time at the weekend so I got some work on my documented life project done as I was way behind! I've now got week one finished - for now, and started on weeks two and three.

January Theme: The blank page and how to face it
Week One Challenge: Book Paper
Week One Prompt: Be your own goal keeper

Rather than "goals" this year I have areas I want to focus on. I've put these on the tag in the pocket. I've decided to keep them private so I've blurred them out but I have four areas I want to improve this year. On the back of the tag I painted a moon gazing hare. I might go back to the background at a later date but for now I'm calling it done.

Giant Granny Square Blanket

I've put my documented life journal on hold as I'm waiting for some gesso to arrive. I'm not going to stress about getting pages finished before the next prompt comes out as that would take some of the fun out of it and there's no deadline other than what I impose upon myself.

So in the meantime I've got itchy fingers. The weather has been terrible the last few days which always makes me think about knitting or crochet projects. In my hoard of things I can't part with in case I want to use them, I have had a box of odd balls of yarn for what seems like forever. I've pulled out all the dk ones and I'm going to make a giant granny square blanket. I'm randomly choosing the colours as I go. If I like it I will use it on the spare bed if I don't it will be a lawn blanket. I've already gone from liking to hating and back to liking so we'll see. Some of the balls are not ones I've picked but ones I've been given, so they're not what I would normally choose to put together. If I don't use it up though it will sit there another million years and I really want to make room for new things. I happened to see a Mollie Makes offer on Facebook and impulse bought some fat quarters with my Christmas money so they need to go somewhere for a start!

WIP: Documented Life page

So even though I've had more than a week to get my first documented life page done it's not finished yet. I seem to be struggling. I'm not sure if it's because everyone in the house is ill or because I'm putting off committing to the page. My drawing has definitely taken a back seat for the last couple of years so I really want to get my mojo back this year. The prompt is "be your own goalkeeper". I've decided I don't like the word "goal". It feels too much like a deadline or a failure if I don't achieve it, so I'm thinking of it more as this years focus areas. That way I feel like there's less pressure. My mantra is going to be strive for progress, not perfection. Hopefully I'll get it finished this weekend so I can start thinking about the next one!

Hello 2015!

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a great year in 2014 and if not I know 2015 will be better! I don't really make a big fuss over going out New Year's Eve but I do love the beginning of a new year. It's a fresh start. 2014 was a mixed bag for me. I want to start the new year on a positive note and go all out for making 2015 a wonderful year.

I've had the lurgy since Boxing Day so I've been using the resting on the sofa time to think about what I want to achieve in the coming year. Having spent the tail end of last year and the beginning of this year feeling unwell I'm raring to go on new projects.

I'm going to see if I get time to write here again now that the kid is getting a bit older. I miss having somewhere to look back on what I've been up to. I also decided to take part in this year's Documented Life Project over on Art to the 5th. The first prompt is about goals so I've been mulling that over. My journal is all ready to go.
