Autumn Life Changes

Well I've been away for a while, lots of big changes going on at the minute. We're moving house at the weekend so I've been packing and sorting for the last few weeks. Most of it is now done but I'm getting very fed up of living with all the boxes and can't wait to move and unpack. My other big change is I'm expecting my first baby. My little boy is due in March so it's all going to be new and exciting.

In the moving house limbo time I have been planning lots of crafty projects in my head and in lieu of a house I have become addicted to pinterest and looking for housey ideas. Today I've been looking for new hand dyed yarns and crafty items on Etsy and found some fantastic ones. These are three of my faves. Click the link to see all the autumn loveliness.

Joy Bots!

What Brings Portland Joy? Main Gallery | BotJoy

I stumbled across an excellent website today. It's a project by an artist called Gary Hirsch. He makes these amazing little robots drawn on the back of a domino. They have different properties such as Creative Bot or Love Bot. I particularly love his Joy Bot art experiment where he is randomly leaving a set number in different places around Portland, then encouraging the finder to take a photo of it with something that brings them joy and post about it on his website. I love art that gets random people unexpectedly involved.

I've just spent ages looking at his different projects. His Brave Bots are inspiring and such an brilliant idea. Take a look!

Cinder Toffee Scarf

I've been knitting this scarf forever. I really want to start knitting something else so this week I've made a concerted effort to get it finished. It's not a really difficult pattern it just requires concentration so not really one I can do watching tv (hence it taking so long). I finally got it done last night and blocked it this morning. I think it's turned out really well and with the rubbish weather we've been having it'll probably get an outing quite soon.

The gorgeous yarn is hand-dyed superwash fingering weight from creativedeva on Etsy. The pattern is one from Ravelry you can follow the link to it on my project page.

Journal Plans and Inspiration

I've been mulling around a few project ideas. Especially something I can do as a collaborative project with Mark. I like the idea of creating an art journal, that way we can both do bits and pieces towards it. I've see loads of amazing ones, these being a few of my current faves.

Altered Alchemy

Altered Alchemy

I think the most successful ones I've seen have a theme running through-out. I'm having an obsession with M.R. James ghost stories at the minute so I thought it'd be fun to do a journal based on those. They're so fantastically gothic and spooky. With a bit of luck I'll get some good ideas, I have a few already.

New Look, Old Jacket

I've had a cream jacket in my wardrobe for years. It hardly ever gets worn any more. Not because I don't like it but because I have another cream jacket in just the same style but a different fabric which I like better. Consequently this poor jacket always gets over looked. I've been meaning to do something with it for ages and finally got round to it last week.

Firstly I decided to dye it a different colour. It was going to be grey (I used one of the dylon cold water dyes) but after I finished and dried it I thought I'd run it through the washing machine and it turned it a cool greeny bluey grey - happy accident. I decided to keep the buttons, and just sew them on with different thread. The flower I bought ages ago at a quilt show just because I liked it, it goes perfectly with the new colour so I made it into a brooch for it. Now I just need some actual warm weather so I can wear it!

Poppy ACEO

I had a lovely week off last week. Watched the Queens Jubilee which was fab, went to Erddig as I already mentioned, did some gardening over at my mum's and went to Download Festival at the weekend. All in all a fun week but I didn't do much by the way of drawing. This little ACEO is one I haven't posted yet, however I actually finished it the week before. It's done in watercolours and pencil and was inspired by the poppies I've got in the garden at the minute. I love the sculptural shapes of the flowers before and after they flower, it's such a contrast to the delicacy of the flowers themselves.

Yesterday we went on a trip to Erddig which is a beautiful 18th century house in Wales. As it was jubilee weekend they had bands playing and processions, and it was packed! It definitely deserves a re-visit when it's a bit quieter with a picnic. The gardens were lovely and really well looked after. The house itself is very large and grand. The rooms inside are beautiful but it is a frustrating place to visit. It's the most cordoned off National Trust house I've ever been in. Most rooms you can only stick your head in from outside the room or stand still in the corner, and they are so anxious to protect the interior you can barely see the light is kept so low. What you could see though is beautiful and well worth a visit.

Dryad Sketch

Today I have been mostly painting furniture. I have a set of drawers and a small table I'm in the middle of revamping. But that's another story..

Last night however I finished off the second sketch I'd been working on. As usual I'm not content with it but in an effort to be less critical on myself I've finished it and am posting it anyway. I didn't start off with any ideas. I literally drew an eye and worked out from there. It's just done in pencil. I think she kind of turned out Dryad like. She's not supposed to be human, hence the supernatural thinness. Real people are not that shape.

The Great Tangled Mess!

Much like Barbara Good, I think best in the garden. That's not to say I wander around it in my wellies in the middle of the night but I find it a peaceful and focusing place to be. The weather for the last week has been glorious so obviously I've been pottering around the garden - thinking (amongst other things). Perhaps a little late, I've come to the conclusion my head is a jumbled mess, and this actually hinders me doing anything creative. I have so many ideas I can't actually sit down and get one done (can it be I have too much imagination??). On top of that I lack any real confidence in my artwork so anything I do start often gets junked straight away as it isn't going how I want it.

So I've come up with a new plan. Each day I've just been sitting down with a pencil and paper and drawing whatever spills out of my head. Not planning it, just letting the pencil go where it wants. Now I'm not expecting most of it to be any good, but I'm actually really enjoying just making something appear on the page. Maybe I'll make a couple of good ideas pop out from the tangled mess of brain I have. If so then that's a bonus. If not then nevermind, maybe it will all help my head be less of a confusing mess, and I'm usually content as long as I have some sort of creative outlet. I sometimes think trying to be an artist is like hunting a Snark.

Run with the wolves..

I've been working on some digital collage pieces this week to get into the swing of things again. This one is done in Photoshop with some of my photos and a very old illustration of my talented partner. We had a sort through our combined ridiculous amount of past artwork when we moved and there we a few pieces I really liked but didn't know what to do with just on their own so I've decided to use them to make new pieces. I'm not entirely sure if I've finished this but it's finished for now.

Roll on Spring

The weather this past week has been cold, foggy and miserable. I can't wait for spring to get here. To cheer myself up I've been browsing for inspiration. I've currently got an obsession with all things gypsy. I've been trying to get hold of this book but it appears to be impossible to get hold of in the UK at the minute so I've had to make myself content with what I can find on the internet.

I've also just stumbled across a fabulous site rosehip. Her crochet edged cushions are fantastic. Just what's needed to chase away the winter!

RHS Flower Show 2011, Tatton Park

I'm trying to sort through some of the massive collection of photo's on my PC and get around to uploading them. These were taken on last years trip to the flower show. Lots of lovely colour!
